Red mercury does indeed exist, however, a Russian nuclear expert now says, although its origins and uses remain a mystery.
According to Evgeny Mikerin, head of the department of science and technology in Russia’s Atomic Energy Ministry, red mercury is neither a red herring nor a nuclear terrorist’s dream.
Rather, he says, it is an exotic radioactive material used in microelectronics.
Mikerin, who attended a recent conference on plutonium in London, told The Associated Press ″it’s almost impossible to produce″ red mercury ″in pure form.″
″It’s like the Abominable Snowman,″ he said. ″Nobody has seen or intercepted it and nobody has analyzed it.″
Red mercury is not being produced by the Atomic Energy Ministry or the Russian Academy of Sciences, Mikerin said, but he hinted that a small company might be making it with an eye to the Japanese microelectronics industry.
